Laser Vision Correction Candidacy
Whilst there are more laser vision correction options than ever before, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they will all be suitable solutions for you. On consultation, we usually always find that one variety of laser vision correction is more appropriate for your individual needs than others. No solution is better than another, it is simply a case of finding that which will be best to help you achieve the clearer vision that you deserve.
In order to determine this, you will need to attend a comprehensive consultation at our New York offices where our experienced and knowledgeable team will assess your unique needs.
In the meantime, here is what you need to know about candidacy for each of the laser vision correction solutions that we offer here at Maple Eye and Laser.
Candidacy For PRK
PRK laser vision correction is the ‘granddaddy’ of laser vision techniques. The process differs from others in that it involves the removal of the entire epithelium, which is the outermost layer of corneal tissue. This removes the risk of flap-related complications, but patients find that regrowth of the epithelium means that it does take a little longer for their eyes to heal.
PRK is particularly well suited to patients for whom LASIK is not appropriate. This includes those who have very thin corneas, large pupils or corneal scarring. It is also recommended for patients who participate in high contact sports such as football or basketball.
Candidacy For LASIK
LASIK is arguably the best-known laser vision correction technique. The process involves cutting a flap into the epithelium which is then lifted so that the underlying corneal tissue can be reshaped using the laser.
Patients who are considered to be good candidates for LASIK tend to have had a stable prescription for the last two years, have healthy eyes and have a current prescription that falls within the specified parameters. These are up to +6.00 diopters of hyperopia, up to 6 diopters of astigmatism or up to -12.00 diopters of nearsightedness.
Candidacy For LASEK
LASEK laser eye surgery combines the benefits of both PRK and LASIK into one procedure. This includes avoiding the flap-related complications associated with LASIK and fewer occurrences of dry eye while retaining the epithelium through a unique technique.
LASEK laser eye surgery is often recommended for patients who have thin or steep corneas that may make it difficult to create the flap needed for LASIK. It is also a good choice for patients who experience dry eye syndrome since LASEK tends to be less likely to cause dryness. Again, your prescription must fall within certain limits and your pupils must not be too large or you will be at risk of complications such as glare and halos.
