LASIK Recovery Timeline: The Path to Clear Vision
A wonderful benefit of LASIK surgery is that patients can experience improved vision immediately after the procedure. However, a full recovery can take up to six months. To ensure that you have a thorough understanding of what to expect after your surgery, the doctors at Maple Eye and Laser Center will review the LASIK recovery timeline with you at their practice in the White Plains, NY-area. Contact us today to find out more about what to expect after your LASIK surgery. The First 24 Hours
Immediately after your LASIK procedure, you could experience some minor discomfort. Patients often describe feeling as though something is in their eye. It is important that you do not touch or rub your eyes at this time, since the flap created during surgery needs time to heal. Touching your eye could cause flap complications that require more surgery.
"Once you are home, it is recommended that you rest for a few hours immediately after your surgery."
You could experience the following post-operative symptoms:
- Burning or itching sensation
- Mild pain
- Tearing or watering eyes
- Sensitivity to light or glare
- Hazy or blurry vision
- Red or bloodshot eyes
Since you may be a bit disoriented and have blurry vision, you will need to ask a friend or family member to drive you home after your surgery. Once you are home, it is recommended that you rest for a few hours immediately after your surgery. Many patients find that taking a nap is helpful. Rest not only aids in the recovery process, but can also help minimize discomfort.
Although your post-operative symptoms should typically subside within the first few hours, they could persist for a few days following the procedure. You may also be prescribed one or more eye drops to help prevent infection and inflammation.
The Day After
You will need to return for a post-operative evaluation the first 24 to 48 hours after your surgery. During this appointment, we will test your vision and examine your eyes to see how they are healing. Additionally, since LASIK surgery can sometimes make your eyes feel dry, we may recommend eye drops to help lubricate your eyes.
Patients can typically resume work and most activities within one or two days after having surgery. However, if you will be resuming any activities that could result in harm to your eyes, you will need to consult with us. You will also need to refrain from using lotions, creams, or makeup around the eye for the first two weeks after surgery.
The First Couple Months
Although you should experience clearer vision immediately, it may take three to six months for your vision to fully stabilize. During the first few months after surgery, you may notice mild fluctuations in your vision. These fluctuations are normal.
You may see halos or glares, or find that it is difficult to drive at night. As your eyes heal, the blurred vision will gradually subside and you will be able to enjoy corrective-free vision. Patients should also avoid swimming, saunas, and hot tubs for the first one to two months.
