White Plains, New York - Dr. Howard Kornstein of Maple Eye and Laser Center, is sharing some simple yet effective tips for improving vision and enhancing eye health for 2015.

"A new year means a new beginning, and the start of something better," said Dr. Kornstein. "Offering people tips on improving their vision is just one way to help get 2015 off on the right foot."

Protect Your Eyes from the Sun

The UV rays of the sun cause major damage to the eyes over time. For this reason, good sunglasses are crucial for great vision. Whenever you are outdoors, wear sunglasses and a hat with a brim. This can prevent cataracts and other eye problems in the future.

Eat a Healthy and Balanced Diet

You really are what you eat, so a poor diet can have a negative effect on your eyesight. In order to maintain good vision that lasts, be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, with an emphasis on leafy greens and citrus fruits. Be sure to eat healthy fats as well, such as those found in fish. Protein is important as well, but consider non-meat sources of protein such as beans and eggs.

Quit Smoking (Or Just Don't Start)

Smokers are at an increased chance of developing cataracts and age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration. Avoiding tobacco products will keep your eyes healthy and improve your general wellness in the process.

"This is just another in a long list of compelling reasons to quit," said Dr. Kornstein.

Wear Eye Protection When Playing Sports

Contact sports and combat sports can take their toll on your body, and they can affect your vision in the process. To avoid major eye injuries, be sure to wear protective goggles and/or the proper head and face protection.

"Protecting yourself and your vision is all just a part of playing the game smart and remaining competitive," said Dr. Kornstein.

Be Smart When It Comes to Computer Screens

"We look at monitors all the time these days, but many people don't realize that there's a right way to do it that won't strain your eyes," Dr. Kornstein said.

One important step is ensuring that the top of your monitor is level with your eyes, which allows you to look slightly downward at the screen.

It's also important that breaks are taken while working on the computer. Every 20 minutes, it's a good idea to look away from the screen for 20 seconds and to focus on an object in the distance roughly 20 feet away. After working on the computer for two hours, it's a good idea to take a 15-minute break so the eyes are well rested.

Get an Eye Exam

Eye care specialists offer exceptional advanced diagnostics and state-of-the-art treatment, which can help you maintain great vision that lasts for years. Be sure to meet with an eye doctor for regular eye exams to keep your prescription current and prevent major vision problems down the road.
